Reviewer: Sam Cochran, global features director

Even though Cochran is 6’3,” he says he doesn’t experience back pain or too many other aches that others might seek with this bed’s proprietary hybrid construction. He was simply looking for a comfortable mattress that didn’t feel too springy or too soft, and it delivered. It’s one-of-one becauase of its cushioning and springs that were first designed to give NASA pilots some extra comfort during test flights. For sleepers like Cochran, the custom materials are made to feel pressure relieving and limit motion transfer if you’re co-sleeping. “The combination of materials in this hybrid mattress yields a particularly cossetting surface, yielding to the shape of your body,” he says, adding that it’s up to par with other cooling mattresses since it doesn’t retain heat.

“I share a bed with my boyfriend of several years and his rescue cocker spaniel, so there can be a lot of movement as we all try to get comfortable and fall asleep,” Cochran adds. “I was thrilled that I couldn’t feel either of them toss or turn throughout the night. On this mattress, I sleep like rock—often waking up in the same position as I fell asleep in.”

Reviewer: Yelena Moroz Alpert, contributor

While content with her old mattress, a memory foam model, Alpert noticed that she started waking up with hip pain and needed something with targeted pressure relief. “I’ve been testing out the Tiami mattress for months and have yet to feel any discomfort in my hips,” she says. “It feels as if my body is suspended while I sleep, so I never feel sore or achy in the morning.” This bed has a high-density memory foam layer that sits atop double-pocketed coils and specialty pods that adjust to movement. What’s more, there is a reinforced coil perimeter that might be one of the best edge support technologies we’ve seen.

Alpert was also pleasantly surprised at how well the Tiami regulates temperature. “My bedroom is at least five degrees warmer than the rest of the house, but you’d never know sleeping on this mattress,” she explains. “Not once did I wake up sweaty or hot.” Alpert attributes it to the combination of the organic cotton cover and the airflow channels in the layers and coils that align just so. “Tiami says that the natural airflow is seven times better than a traditional pocketed coil system and I’d say the claim is likely accurate,” she says. “My bed never feels like it is trapping heat, even in the sweltering days of August.”

The final touch is the look of the top cover, which is meant to mimic the waves of the Mediterranean and certainly plays into the sanctuary aspect of bedroom decor. Every time Alpert changes her sheets, she gets a dose of design that makes her wonder if she should lean into a coastal aesthetic.

  • Trial: 100 nights

Upsides

Downsides

Shorter warranty period than some other mattresses in this guide

Reviewer: Cade Hiser, contributor

This “chill” mattress by Sealy is true to its name. This bed has been a huge relief for Hiser, whose old mattresses were always on the firmer side and made of materials that ran hot. “I do not wake up in the middle of the night like I used to, tossing and turning,” she says. “I also stay sleeping at a comfortable temperature throughout the night.”

The mattress cover has built-in cooling technology that’s designed to absorb and erase heat altogether. Even though it’s supportive from premium coils, the bed also has the qualities of a soft mattress with layers of memory foam that Hiser says adjusts to your sleep position.

All of the perks above make falling and staying asleep a breeze. “I can really tell the difference in my sleep and I wake up feeling refreshed and energized,” Hiser shares. “With this mattress, I wake up significantly less in the middle of the night, and if I do I never have trouble falling back asleep. It really has made sleeping easy!”

DreamCloud Premier Hybrid Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Semi-firm
  • Height: 13 inches
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)

  • Warranty: Lifetime

Upsides

  • Two-inch memory foam layer is body-contouring and relieves pressure points
  • CertiPUR-US certified and 100% fiberglass-free

Downsides

Arrives in a box but white glove delivery is extra

Reviewer: Michael Shome, global visuals director

We’ve named the Dreamcloud Premier Hybrid our favorite mattress-in-a-box for a few years running, which Shome chalks up to the delivery to set up a sleep experience. It conveniently arrives compressed in a compact box, though he does say it requires at least two people to move in place since it’s too heavy for a solo lift. From there, it’s easy to set up since it expands to its full size once unwrapped. Ringing it at about $1,000 when it’s on sale (and it does get marked down frequently), this is a great luxury-meets-budget mattress.

In terms of comfort, this bed is second to none for those seeking a firm yet plush feel. “The mattress is moderately firm, but the plush Euro Top adds an extra layer of coziness and comfort,” Shome says. “The DreamCloud Premier King has a super-cozy cashmere top and seven decadent layers of adaptive support.”

Co-sleepers are in for a treat, too, as it has just the right amount of stability that keeps a restless partner from waking you up. Shome already recommended DreamCloud to his parents, who often complain that “transfer movement” is annoying and disturbs their sleep. Aside from the Saatva Latex Hybrid, this is the only other mattress on our list that offers a one-year trial period to help you thoroughly assess the mattress. “Too often mattresses lose their support after consecutive nights of sleep, which makes the trial period quite valuable,” Shome adds.

Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress

  • Height: 12 inches
  • Shipping: Free and includes old mattress and box spring removal
  • Trial: 365 nights
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Upsides

  • Hand-crafted Euro top is made of organic cotton and treated with botanical antimicrobial treatment to keep the mattress fresh
  • GOTS-certified organic wool and natural latex are regulating
  • Individually wrapped coils are made of recycled steel designed to minimize motion transfer
  • Ergonomic design with five-zone pressure relief is ideal for those with back pain

Downsides

Doesn’t ship in a box

Reviewer: Amy Astley, global editorial director and US editor in chief

It’s no wonder Astley sleeps soundly night after night on this pressure-relieving Saatva mattress that is designed to boost comfort around the lumbar area: “My lower back pain disappeared soon after we started sleeping on it—that alone is mattress gold!”

This mattress is well-suited for two (very) different sleepers, too. Astley’s husband, who is six foot five and often a back sleeper, is just as comfortable as she is, a much smaller side sleeper. Astley adds that this bed is great for hot sleepers. “We both sleep warm and appreciate the vented airflow channels, which allow for circulation and breathability.” She also notes that it has a breathable feel thanks to latex’s naturally cooling properties. Plus, she can’t feel any motion transfer throughout the night, which helps her sleep soundly.

“I look forward to getting into bed and it is so cozy and comfy that I don’t care to get out of it in the morning!” Astley says. “It has been life-enhancing.”

Ostermoor Bedford Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Medium-plush
  • Height: Medium-plush
  • Shipping: Free
  • Trial: 100 nights
  • Warranty: 10 years

Upsides

  • Unique ticking pattern on the mattress for design enthusiasts
  • Soft for a cradling feel
  • Supportive innerspring coils

Downsides

Doesn’t come in different firmness levels like some other brands on the market

Reviewer: Zoë Sessums, contributor

This is one of the most luxurious picks in this mattress guide—and Sessums can attest, noting that the bed is an elevated experience from start to finish. “As a heritage brand with deep roots—founded in 1853 in what is now Manhattan’s Nolita neighborhood—the brand has innovated from horsehair and straw beds to even more premium natural materials like cotton batting,” she says in her mattress review. “It also offers rare attention to visual design.” The bed itself is dressed in a blue-and-white ticking pattern to complement high-end details like hand-stitching and the tufted top. Sessums says it all makes the bed an attractive piece of furniture instead of just a place to sleep.

As for getting some rest, she notes that the mattress feels cozy from its perfect balance of spring and cushion. While it has a pretty medium-firm feel, she says it still offers some softness like you’d find in all-foam mattresses. “It’s firm but not rigid—supportive in all the right places while still feeling comfortable and plush enough to relax into,” Sessums says, noting it has give without sinkage. “From the moment I plopped down, I was amazed by how comfortable it was.”

All in all, she would recommend this, “especially to someone who values design and craftsmanship as much as comfort. It’s definitely a splurge, but if you’re ready to invest in something that feels bespoke and luxurious, it’s worth every penny.”

Best for Side Sleepers

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Medium-firm
  • Height: 13.5 inches
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)
  • Trial: 100 nights
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Upsides

  • Moisture-wicking and breathable Tencel fabric on the top cover
  • Pressure-relief is specifically targeted for shoulders and back
  • Memory foam layer offers extra cushioning for medium firmness

Downsides

Slight off-gassing scent upon unboxing

Reviewer: Gaby Ulloa, contributor

If you need back support, this Helix Midnight medium-firm mattress is a solid option for a new mattress—no pun intended. Ulloa is officially a fan after noticing that her sleep improved after just one day. Even though she typically wakes up from back pain when sleeping on a hotel mattress, or even vetted ones like the bed at her mom’s house. “It provides the perfect ‘not too soft, not too firm’ situation and allows me to sink into a deep night’s sleep while still feeling completely supported,” she says. “I wake up feeling refreshed and well-rested each day.”

The motion transfer is top-tier. She doesn’t feel her six-foot-nine partner move around as she sleeps, and he, too, “agreed the support was ideal.”

Available on Amazon, Ulloa says the shipping and delivery were simple with the bed in a box arriving at her doorstep. The only drawback to this mattress was upon unboxing. She opted for the Helix mattress that’s two inches thicker than its standard mattress, which made it a little harder to move from the box to the bed frame.

“After my friend and I managed to get the mattress out of the box, I removed the plastic wrap carefully (making sure not to cut into the mattress) and then watched in awe at how quickly it expanded into its full shape,” she says. “I noticed a slight chemical smell and decided to stay the night elsewhere. Full disclosure: This was more due to the fact that I still had one night left in my old apartment before I had to turn in the keys rather than the smell itself, which faded fairly quickly.”

For Combination Sleepers

  • Photo: Nashia Baker

Coyuchi Natural REM Mattress

Specs

  • Brand firmness rating: Medium-firm
  • Height: 11 inches
  • Shipping: Free (in a box)
  • Trial: 100 nights
  • Warranty: 25 warranty

Upsides

  • Great for combination sleepers
  • Plush top layer

Downsides

Its height isn’t as tall as some mattresses in this list, so it might be less ideal for sleepers looking for a grand bed for their room

Reviewer: Nashia Baker, senior commerce editor

For Baker, Coyuchi’s Natural Rem signature hybrid bed hits all the right notes for a peaceful slumber—so much so that she never would have guessed that it’s the AD-favorite bedding brand’s first-ever mattress. “It has the quality of a bed from a legacy brand,” she says. The hand-tufted construction is incredibly compact considering it’s filled with coils and layers upon layers of organic, soft materials like wool and latex.

While she has always slept on beds with a box spring, Baker noticed how supported she feels as a combination sleeper—whether she is resting on her side, stomach, or any sleep position for that matter—the mattress feels firm. “I know that mattresses-in-a-box can get a bad rep for being too soft and contouring deeply to the point of feeling like you’re sinking,” she adds. “This bed has just enough support from the coils to maintain its shape—I have a strong feeling it will last for years to come.”

In comparison to her old mattress, which was extra-firm to the point of being uncomfortable, this one has a soft cover and inner layers that give her support around her neck and shoulders. Baker recommends this mattress for anyone who values sustainable materials like organic latex, cotton, and wool padding.

Best Firmness Variety

Specs

  • Brand firmness: Soft, luxury firm, firm, plus firmness options
  • Height: 13.5 inches
  • Shipping: Free
  • Trial: 120 nights
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Upsides

  • Several firmness levels available
  • Wicks away sweat and moisture
  • Comes with a lifetime warranty

Downsides

Not made of sustainable materials like many beds in our guide

Reviewer: Mark Burka, contributor

Want a more customizable feel to your mattress? Burka recommends this one, after looking for months online for a firm, luxurious bed with a firmer pillow top with his partner. “We came across the WinkBed, which seemed like a perfect balance between firm and soft due to its hybrid components, plus it offered detailed insights on which mattress is best for each type of sleeper,” he says. The mattress also has moisture-wicking properties to help you sleep cool, and rings in at a more affordable price than most mattresses in this list.

The firm model worked out great for Burka, but your options don’t stop there to meet your needs. You can choose from soft, luxury firm, firm and plus for a personalized bed. “I would pick the Plus mattress “for heavier people” with the firmest option, now available since I last purchased from WinkBed, knowing the pillowtop was going to be as comfy as it is,” he says. “My partner and I are a same-sex, male-identifying couple and probably would not like to admit that we classify as “heavier people,” but in this case, we do.”

How We Tested

For our AD guides, we test all of the mattress brands by giving them a whirl in our own homes for at least a month. That means tracking everything from shipping to unboxing to situating it in our bedrooms. Then there is the scrupulous note-taking of how easy it is to fall (and stay) asleep. Aside from these factors, we get into the specifics to truly zero in on what sets mattresses apart within the industry.

Comfort: While comfort can be subjective, our editors and contributors kept in mind mattress qualities such as breathability, support, and softness/firmness for the best sleep. Our team notes that organic materials like latex and cotton offer the most breathability, while extras like gel-infused layers add a level of cooling comfort to catch some extra z’s. Since all of the mattresses in this list are hybrid, they include encased coils. Last but not least, we looked for options that include plenty of memory foam and even pillow-top covers to give a soft-to-the-touch feel without feeling like you’re sinking into quicksand.

Pressure relief: If you’re looking for a mattress that can help keep aches at bay, hybrid beds are helpful because of their supportive coils. Many are also designed with targeted pressure relief points for areas that support the shoulders and spine. Some of our picks have several layers of coils to give added support to mitigate annoying neck and back pains.

Motion isolation: Our editors were mindful of motion isolation during testing. Noting if they could feel their partner getting in and out of bed as they slept. Our team noticed that beds with several layers of dense foam did the best at keeping motion isolation to a minimum. In the case of Tempur-Pedic, known for its NASA testing, the cushioning absorbs any movement with cradle-like precision.

Edge support: If you like to live (and sleep) on the edge, this factor is especially important. Our testers kept edge support in mind when trying out these mattresses to ensure they didn’t feel like they were slipping off the bed. Tiami, for instance, has a designated set of 10-inch coils around the perimeter of the mattress that will keep you from rolling off, even if you are right on the edge.

What to Look For

To make sure you have the best shopping experience, take note of the following factors.

Durability: Since hybrid mattresses are made of foam and coils, they are more durable than others on the market. However, we recommend a balance between steel coils and sturdy, sustainable materials like organic latex and cotton that are designed to last for years.

Materials: The best hybrid mattresses are known for high-quality materials that include everything from silky moisture-wicking Tencel to cooling organic cotton. Some brands, such as Parachute and Saatva, also use hypoallergenic New Zealand wool in their comfort layers.

Price: Most hybrid mattresses fall between $800 and $4,000. While some luxury mattresses will be more expensive, the higher price points also come with high-end features like pillow-top covers and organic materials. Many brands host mattress sales on the regular. Plus, you can shop some of these mattresses on Amazon at a discount.

Warranty: Since beds are usually a big-ticket purchase, it’s best to look for extensive warranties so you know you’re getting your money’s worth. Many industry-leading brands start at 10-year warranties, while some, like Saatva and DreamCloud, include lifetime warranties. Keep an eye out for sleep trials. Many brands on this list offer at least a 100-night trial to get you acquainted with the mattress without feeling like you have to commit right away.
